Message from General Chairs

SIBGRAPI - Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images is a traditional forum bringing together researchers, students and professionals in Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and related areas. The conference is annually promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) through its special interest group on Graphics and Image Processing (CEGRAPI).

The 29th edition of SIBGRAPI will take place in the city of São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. One of the leading industrial and research centers in Latin America, the city is located in the Paraíba Valley, between the two most active production and consumption regions in the country, São Paulo (80 km) and Rio de Janeiro (320 km). It is the main city of the Metropolitan Region of the Paraíba Valley and the Northern Coast.

In 2016, the conference is being organized by the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and by the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE). We are delighted to introduce an exciting program, with six internationally renowned researchers as invited speakers and a honor to the senior researcher, Luiz Velho. Apart from the traditional full-papers track and the workshops of Theses and Dissertations (WTD), Undergraduate Works (WUW) and Works in Progress (WIP), this year we announce three workshops: the Workshop on Industry Applications (WIA), which aims at describing solutions based on graphics, patterns, and images, for industry applied problems; the Workshop on Face Processing Applications (WFPA), which aims at gathering research and technological initiatives that process facial information not only as a key to security but also as a fundamental and singular pattern in human perception, social, medical and forensic contexts; and the Workshop on Pattern Recognition for Earth Observation (WPREO), which aims at providing information about processes occurring at the Earth surface by exploiting airborne and spaceborne sensors data.

We are very grateful to all the chairs for their excellent work leading SIBGRAPI 2016 activities. We also would like to thank the invited speakers and the authors of technical papers, tutorials, and workshops for their invaluable collaboration to the success of SIBGRAPI 2016. Finally, we would like to thank the support from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), SBC, NVIDIA, IBM, and Google.

We wish all participants a time full of opportunities for sharing their work and learn from others. Welcome to SIBGRAPI 2016!

Message from Program Chairs

Welcome to the 2016 SIBGRAPI Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images. This is the 29th edition of the conference that is annually promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) through its special interest group on Graphics and Image Processing (CEGRAPI). This event gathers students, researchers and professionals to exchange experiences and research ideas regarding Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition and Scientific Visualization.

The conference will be held in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. This city is one of the leading industrial and research centers in Latin America and is located in the Paraíba Valley, between the two most active production and consumption regions in the country, São Paulo (80 km) and Rio de Janeiro (320 km). It is the main city of the Metropolitan Region of the Paraíba Valley and the Northern Coast.

In 2016, SIBGRAPI will have, for the first time, an alternative track for paper submission to a Special Section in the Computers & Graphics Journal (CAG). The first round of revision for the CAG track was earlier, providing enough time for authors of rejected papers to revise and submit them to the conference main track. In addition, there is an excellent opportunity for publishing industrial based applications, with the return of the Workshop on Industry Applications (WIA) that did not take place since the 2012 SIBGRAPI edition.

This year, we received 138 valid submissions to the conference main track, a significant increase compared to the previous editions, resulting in high quality papers. After the peer-reviewing process, 60 papers were accepted to the conference, leading to a similar acceptance rate of previous editions (43%). We are very grateful to the reviewers that provided important feedback to the authors, either to prepare their camera-ready version or to improve their works.

Welcome to São Jose dos Campos! We hope that SIBGRAPI 2016 will be a great opportunity for participants to discuss their research and create new collaborations.

Message from Tutorial Chairs

Tutorials of SIBGRAPI 2016 received proposals in Image Processing (IP) and Pattern Recognition (PR). All tutorials were blindly reviewed by at least two experts in the topic and judged by some criteria as: relevance for the conference, expected size of the audience, potential to attract participants to the conference, originality and qualification of the instructors in the topic of the tutorial. The four accepted tutorials are going to be presented in the first day of the conference (October 4th, 2016), and will be free of charge to all conference attendees. In addition, the authors of the selected tutorials prepared a survey paper in English, in the tutorial’s topic, and submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

We would like to thank all authors and the reviewers for the nice performed work! And we wish a very productive day to all attendees!
